FEDOMA HOLDS 4TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY Federation of Disability Organisation in Malawi (FEDOMA) held election to Executive Council where Nitta Hanjahanja was mandated to continue as Chairperson. The election was conducted by Malawi Election Commission-MEC and held on 30 October 2017 at COMESA hall in Blantyre during 4th General Assembly where twelve Disability Persons Organisations-DPO’s affiliates with 24 contestants took part in the polls.

In her acceptance speech, Hanjahanja said will work with all affiliates and meet people’s expectations in FEDOMA.

“I thank God for the opportunity to serve in this capacity for yet another term. I hope to work closely with all persons with all types of disabilities, and proceed with various projects that I have work on with the council, FEDOMA, Government and the media.

“I will see to it that we complete infrastructure meant for FEDOMA secretariat which has stalled due to financial constraints where shall have projects taking place and to empower persons with disability. The building is a Resource Centre for persons with disability and rent out some of the rooms as a way to generate income. I will looking forward to step up implementation and enhanced inclusive education efforts among others to that people with disabilities have enjoy freedom of various rights. ‘’ She says.

There was a minute of silence in memory of a unknown man with epileptic who was brutally killed at Chileka Blantyre suspected to be a blood sucker. Earlier on before the election, FEDOMA Executive Director, Amos Action highlighted a five report which tackled number of success stories and challenges faced by the federation.

‘We are working with non-Government Organisations-NGO’s that fall under CONGOMA so that they assist us in championing disabilities issues. On other side, we were elected by Southern Region Consortium on disability on HIV where FEDOMA is a publicist Secretary’.

‘I also glad to tell you that we are making strides on the fight on parliament representation for persons will disabilities, awareness on rights, voter civic education ahead of the 2019 polls’. He says.

The election was free and fair that attended by 12 Disability Persons Organisations affiliates with 24 contestants including two organisations that saw being incorporated into the FEDOMA family namely Spine Injuries Association in Malawi-SIAM and Disability Rights Organisation Association in Malawi-DROM.

The legal process was presided by Advocate Mandala Mambulasa.

The new FEDOMA Executive Council is Nitta Hanjahanja as Chairperson, Mapopa Shaba is vice.

The Secretary is Grace Gondwe, Vice-Bertha Malaya while Muchaneta Nachanje was chosen as Treasurer among others . FEDOMA is an umbrella of disability organisations which works to unify, coordinate efforts and strengthen the advocacy work of its affiliates for the wellbeing of persons with disabilities in Malawi.
